Dr. Seaberg Inducted into Oklahoma Educator’s Hall of Fame

Dr. John Jefferson Seaberg, Jr

John J. Seaberg, professor emeritus of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, was inducted into the Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, in June 1993.

After 40 years in education and 22 years at the University of Oklahoma, Seaberg retired in June 1991. He was founder and program developer for Oklahoma’s Project LEAD (Leadership in Educational Administration Development). From 1969 to 1971, he served as head of OU’s educational technical assistance team in Colombia, South America, installing secondary education programs in that country.

“I am honored to have been selected for the Hall of Fame,” Seaberg said. “It took a long time and much effort to design and implement programs to prepare educational leaders and administrators. I am very proud of the students that I’ve had. Through the preparation they’ve had in our program and their own efforts, they’re ‘difference makers’.”

He also noted that he was pleased about the college’s move to a five-year teaching program.

“TE-Plus involves the university in researching teacher education and developing models and practices that can make teaching better,” he said.

Seaberg held numerous leadership positions at OU. Among these were membership on the Faculty Senate, the Advanced Programs Executive Committee, and member of the council for Educational Administration Monograph Series Advisory Board. He also served as co-facilitator for the Oklahoma Academy for State Goals Task Force, special adviser to the Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Advisory Council and secretary general for Oklahoma Urban Superintendents.

He has been recognized with a National Institute of Mental Health Fellowship, the Adams State College Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award, the Oklahoma Women in Educational Administration Friend to Education Award, and the Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration Special Merit Award.

A Colorado native, Seaberg received his B.A. degree from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, and his doctorate in administration and supervision from the University of New Mexico in 1968.

He and his wife, Rhea, have three sons: Jeff, Columbia, MO; Norman, Oklahoma City; and James, Dallas.
